Civilians in northern Shan State’s Mabein Township are in terror following two airstrikes carried out by the Myanmar Air Force that struck an urban ward on Tuesday, causing an unconfirmed number of civilian fatalities.
Local sources confirmed that a regime fighter jet targeted the town despite the absence of active ground clashes in the immediate area.
Mabein, located 217 miles (349 km) northwest of the regional capital Lashio and 149 miles (239 km) south of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) headquarters in Laiza, has been under KIA administrative control since its capture in January 2024.
Martial law and regional escalation
The aerial bombardment comes as the military regime intensifies efforts to reclaim lost territory across northern Shan and neighboring Kachin states:
- Martial Law Regime: Mabein is among 15 townships in Shan State placed under a military state of emergency and martial law since April 23, transferring all executive and judicial authorities directly to military commanders.
- Shwegu Ground Clashes: In neighboring Kachin State, frontline sources report that over 1,000 regime troops engaged in heavy ground combat with KIA-led resistance forces, including the the People’s Defence Force (PDF), in Shwegu Township May 5-9. Shwegu is one of five Kachin townships currently operating under martial law.

Strategic push Toward Bhamo and Highway Reopening
According to Zin Yaw, a former military officer who joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) post-coup, regime forces advancing through Mabein’s Ngar Ooe village and Shwegu are attempting to break through resistance lines to reinforce the strategic stronghold of Bhamo.
Meanwhile, regime media reported on May 6 that military forces had successfully reopened the 341-mile (548 km) Mandalay-to-Kachin highway via Sagaing Region after recapturing 12 towns along the transit route.
