An event called “The Art of Defiance: 4 Years of Burning Circle” was held at Three Kings Monument in Chiang Mai, Thailand to raise awareness about the four years since the Myanmar military coup on Feb. 1, 2021.
“Today’s event is quite important for us, for Burmese people. To commemorate the people’s resilience throughout these four years of burning circle. It is to commemorate the people’s resistance,” said Austin, a member of Thai-Myanmar Activists Network.
The event showcased traditional Thangyat dance performance. Myanmar students and activists staged a dramatic re-enactment of the brutal suppression of protesters by Myanmar soldiers during the 2021 anti-coup protests. They called for the release of jailed State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, and wanted recognition of her National League for Democracy (NLD) party’s landslide victory during the 2020 elections.
“They got idea to show the people how what happened in Myanmar until now,” said Sam, lead vocalist of the Born in Burma Band. “So, we will never forget that day.”
