Myanmar’s jailed State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi met with Arnaud de Baecque, the Resident Representative and Head of Delegation for the International Committee of the Red Cross(ICRC) in Naypyidaw on Monday, regime spokesperson Khaing Khaing Soe shared on the social media app Telegram on Aug. 3.
The meeting comes amid concerns over the deteriorating health conditions of the 81-year-old civilian leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who has been held in detention since the military coup on Feb. 1, 2021, which ousted her National League for Democracy (NLD) administration and plunged Burma into a civil war.
The meeting between the ICRC’s Arnaud de Baecque and Aung Saun Suu Kyi took place in Naypyidaw after her son, Kim Aris, launched a “Proof of Life” campaign in April demanding the regime allow independent verification that she’s still alive. Aung San Suu Kyi has been held incommunicado by the regime for over five years.
