Jul 1, 2008 (DVB), The National League for Democracy has called on the junta to release party supporters who were beaten and detained while celebrating Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's 63rd birthday at NLD headquarters on 19 June.
In a statement released on Monday, the NLD said that authorities had stood by and not tried to put a stop to the violent actions of members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and Swan Arr Shin as they detained the NLD members.
Dr Win Naing, a member of the NLD's Information Committee, said the party had not had any response from the authorities to its letter to the regime's top brass senior general Than Shwe regarding the violent actions of the junta-backed associations.
"We have constantly inquired about the whereabouts of our 14 supporters but we have repeatedly been told that we would be informed if there were any developments relating to the detainees," said Dr Win Naing.
"They shouldn't have been arrested in the first place because they didn't do anything wrong," he continued.
"We can't take any legal action unless we know what the authorities are charging them with."
On 27 May, authorities arrested 16 well-wishers who marched to Daw Aung Suu Kyi's house to pray for her release.
