Jul 2, 2008 (DVB), A bomb exploded at a local Union Solidarity and Development Association office in Rangoon’s Shwe Pyithar township early on Tuesday morning, locals said, but no one was injured in the blast.
A resident of Shwe Pyithar said the bomb went off in a two-storey building which the local USDA used as their office in 6/9 ward’s Sittaung street at around 6.30am.
He said the walls of the building had collapsed in the explosion but USDA officials who were working in the office had escaped injury as they had gone out on the street to see a car accident which took place in front of the office about five minutes before the bomb exploded.
"There was a car crash in front of the USDA office just before the bomb went off, and everyone in the office came out of the building to watch it," said the resident.
"Only the office was damaged, all the people survived."
The resident added that police had begun an investigation into the explosion and no one was allowed near the bomb site.
"They had this yellow tape around the office and no one was allowed on the premises," he said.
Shwe Pyithar township USDA was unavailable for comment on the incident, while township police said they did not have the authority to give out information about the bombing.
Since the explosion, Burmese state media have warned the public to be vigilant against further attacks.
