Dec 17, 2008 (DVB)â€"National League for Democracy members at a monthly meeting in Yenangyaung township, Magwe division, revived their call for party offices across the country to be reopened after being sealed off for more than five years.
The meeting went ahead at chief organiser Tint Lwin’s home despite an initial ban by the authorities.
At the meeting, party members discussed the observation of Independence Day on 4 January, the intensification of party activities and called for the reopening of party offices, party secretary Maung Maung said.
"We have faced similar restrictions in the past and they are getting worse, but we have been pushing against them to make it happen," he said.
"They will keep banning us in the future but we will keep resisting the bans. Their job is to prevent us working and our job is to make it happen."
Maung Maung said the NLD was a legal party but was being prevented from carrying out its activities.
"The offices have been closed since 31 May 2003. Our party is a legal party under edict 4/88 and the winner of the [1990] multi-party election," he said.
"But we have to hold our meetings at our organisers’ homes. We do not have the rights we are entitled to as a legal party."
