NLD youth launch signature campaign

Feb 12, 2009 (DVB), National League for Democracy youth members today launched a new signature campaign calling for the release of all political prisoners, according to youth leader Myo Nyunt.

Myo Nyunt said the campaign would demand the release of all political prisoners in Burma, including detained NLD leaders Aung San Suu Kyi and her deputy Tin Oo.

"All members attending the Union Day ceremony will carry out the campaign," he said.

The decision to launch the campaign was taken at a meeting of members of the NLD youth activities committee, which was attended by state and divisional youth assistance groups.

"We are trying to strengthen the formation of youth organisations and preparing to fulfil our duties wherever we may be," he said.

The meeting was attended by 30 NLD youth members from Rangoon, Mandalay, Bago, Magwe, Irrawaddy and Tenesserim divisions and Mon, Kachin and Arakan states.

The participants at the meeting resolved to support United Nations special envoy Ibrahim Gambari's demand for the release of political prisoners.

The youth members also agreed to carry out the instructions of the NLD central executive committee and to support the CEC's demand for the reopening of all NLD offices.
