Not one political prisoner released in Independence Day amnesty

A total of 6,186 prisoners were granted an amnesty on Jan. 4 to mark Myanmar’s 78th Independence Day. The most high profile prisoner released was Ye Htut, a retired military officer and former minister in President Thein Sein’s regime, after he was sentenced to 10 years for criticizing the military on social media in October 2023.
