Yangon residents told DVB that a South Korean national, identified by police as Kim Young Deuk, was found dead at his office in the Kabaraye Condominium in Mayangone Township on Saturday. Police suspect it was a robbery turned homicide.
“The killer appeared to have broken into the office and murdered the man,” a resident at the condo building told DVB on the condition of anonymity, adding that Kim’s employees were the first to discover his body at the crime scene and are now under investigation by police.
A source close to the regime administration told DVB that a case of murder was opened under Section 302 of Penal Code at the Mayangone police station. The South Korean embassy in Yangon was notified but has not released any statement.
A source close to the regime Ministry of Home Affairs told DVB on the condition of anonymity that nearly 967 murders were reported in 2024 with 151 of them taking place in Yangon Region.
“The rise in crime is due to police being too afraid to respond to crime scenes without armed military escorts, allowing most criminals to escape,” the source told DVB, adding that between 500-600 criminal cases have been reported in Yangon Region annually since the 2021 military coup.
Other major crimes reported nationwide in 2024 included 562 rape cases, 1,953 child-related crimes, 4,897 drug-related offences, 1,013 deaths from traffic accidents, and 55 human trafficking cases, according to the regime Ministry of Home Affairs.
Yangon has been under a curfew of 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. since Aug. 27 — a reduction from a 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew which was imposed on Feb. 8, 2021.
