Political prisoners commemorate 1962 student uprising

FROM THE DVB NEWSROOM

Political prisoners at Insein Prison staged a protest to commemorate the July 7, 1962 student uprising, according to a letter sent out from the prison. News of the letter sent prison officials into a frenzy. “[Prisoners] were beaten and interrogated. They found out who sent it and will hold them in solitary confinement. But the prisoners already knew the consequences and wanted to let people [outside of the prison] know that they will not give up,” said a former political prisoner on the condition of anonymity. A total of 19,383 political prisoners are being held by the military regime at prisons across Burma.
