Prominent political prisoner Noble Aye dies in Bago Region

FROM THE DVB NEWSROOM

Political prisoner Noble Aye was killed in Bago Region’s Waw Township on Feb. 8, her brother Htet Myat confirmed to DVB on Friday. “I am at a loss as to what to do next. How can I seek justice for her?” he asked.

“We have learned that a woman and a man were shot dead on February 8 while returning from court. Their bodies were taken to Waw Hospital and quietly buried without public notice,” said a member of the Waw People’s Defense Force (PDF).

Noble Aye was arrested at a military checkpoint in Waw Township on Jan. 29. Regime media reported that she was detained with weapons, including a sniper rifle, an M16 rifle, and a pistol. She was also allegedly in possession of five crates of ammunition and six kilograms of gunpowder.

In her 40s, Noble Aye suffered from severe illness, according to her brother. She was sentenced to 42 years in prison for her role in pro-democracy protests in 1996 but was released in an amnesty in 2005. She was jailed once again in 2007 during the Saffron Revolution protests against military rule and released in another amnesty.
