As thousands gathered in Rangoon last week to celebrate Burmese new year (‘Thingyan’), three bombs exploded in an area close to Kandawgyi lake and popular with revellers. Up to nine people died and hundreds were injured in Rangoon’s worst bombing in five years, although no arrests have yet been made. In the days following the incident, state media in Burma blamed the attack on opposition groups based along the Thai-Burma border, while some critics of the ruling junta have said it could be an attempt by the army to frame opposition groups in the run-up to elections this year.
