Record prize money for Burmese boxing match

Feb 20, 2009 (DVB), A traditional Burmese boxing competition which promises the highest prize money in the sport's history in Burma is to be held in Rangoon at the end of this month, it has been announced.

Usually in Burma, the highest prize money for a boxing match winner is around 1.5 million kyat but the winner of the upcoming match will be taking home a sum of 3 million kyat, said an organiser of the event.

"There will be two tournaments; one for amateurs with 3 million kyat for the first prize winner and the other for first-class professional boxers , the person who wins this will get 2.5 million," said the organiser.

"The total prize money for the free tournament is about 6.6 million kyat and 5.7 million kyat for the first class tournament."

He said the entrance fee for spectators would stay the same; 8000 kyat for the special seats and 4500 for normal seats.

A boxing fan in Rangoon told DVB the sport has become very popular among Burmese people with audiences for some matches reaching about 15,000.

But the man said many of those who enjoy boxing matches are not particularly interested in the sport but in the opportunity to make money by betting on the winners.
