Rescue teams request ceasefire in flood-hit Tanintharyi Region after Myanmar military airstrikes

Rescue teams in Tanintharyi Region have called on both the Myanmar military and resistance forces to halt all fighting in areas inundated by flood water to allow them to reach over 22,000 residents from 3,000 households in urgent need of food and drinking water in Yebyu, Thayetchaung and Dawei townships.

“Our biggest difficulty is getting food,” a Tanintharyi resident displaced from his home due to the flooding told DVB. Thirty-two bodies have been recovered in Dawei, Launglon and Thayetchaung since flooding began on Sept. 24.

Launglon, Yebyu and Thayetchaung are located about 12–20 miles (19–32 km) north and south of the Tanintharyi Region capital. Thayetchaung has been contested between the military and resistance forces since late 2024.

The People’s Defence Force (PDF) in Dawei District told DVB that four 250-pound bombs were dropped by the Myanmar Air Force on Thayetchaung’s Pitaing village on Oct. 1 hampering relief efforts. No casualties were reported.

This is the third major flood to hit Tanintharyi in the last month. More than 2,000 residents in Tanintharyi Township were displaced from their homes due to flooding in late August. Tanintharyi is located 188 miles (302 km) south of Dawei.

The regime’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology stated that a low-pressure weather system bringing heavy rain and strong winds may develop over the Bay of Bengal until Oct. 10.
