Journalists Thin Lei Win and Kelly Macnamara founded The Kite Tales in 2016 as a non-profit storytelling platform to chronicle the lives, culture and memories of people across Myanmar. Following the 2021 military coup, The Kite Tales shifted to featuring the voices of people taking part in the anti-coup protests. One year later, it launched a fund to support a handful of journalists and illustrators, who either went underground or had fled their homes to avoid arrest. Check out our photo essay.
