Several ‘possessed’ workers faint at factory in Bago

In what is being described by locals as a supernatural incident, more than 20 factory workers at Karisma Apparel fainted and were sent to Bago General Hospital for treatment earlier this week.

Neighbours in the area surrounding the factory compound in Nyaung Inn village, Bago Division, said the factory workers became possessed by spirits and lost consciousness.

“Around 9 a.m., the young factory workers, one by one, were carried out and sent to the hospital. I am not sure if it was ‘ghost possession’ or not,” said Cho Than, a local resident.

“By 11:30, about 30 factory workers had been carried outside the factory building. The other factory workers were screaming loudly. [Factory supervisors] did not let them leave the factory compound. I called the police station. When the police arrived at the scene, the factory workers were allowed to leave the factory.”

DVB was not able to contact factory officials.

An explanation for the incident has been lacking, but tales of the purportedly supernatural are not uncommon in Burma: In October 2016, the Irrawaddy regional legislature even got involved after 18 schoolgirls at a high school in Myaungmya were reportedly possessed by vengeful spirits.

According to Karisma Apparel’s website, the factory employs a workforce of more than 3,000.
