Shan armies look ahead

High in the Shan foothills straddling the Thailand-Burma border lies Loi Taileng, the home of the Shan State Army. At the weekend, thousands descended on the mountain village-cum-military base for the 53rd Shan Revolution Day, but this one had a unique air to it – among the many guests were top officials from the Shan State Army-North, the one time enemy of their ‘southern’ counterparts who at the weekend publicly cemented a reunion.
