As thousands of prisoners returned to their homes yesterday, much of Burma looked on with listless familiarity – only around 30 of those freed were political prisoners, despite pledges by President Thein Sein that his government is on a path to reform. Opposition icon Aung San Suu Kyi quickly dismissed the event, while international rights group accused the new administration of orchestrating a “sick joke”.
