Sittwe administration pledges to beef up security across the region.
The statement comes after one Rohingya Muslim man was killed by a mob in state capital Sittwe on Tuesday.
Zaw Htay said that security forces carried out a clearance operation in the Buthidaung-Maungdaw region of the Mayu mountain range. “That’s where the terrorists were hiding,” he said.
“Whether the Ma Ba Tha continues or ceases to exist depends entirely on the policies of the NLD government,” said Nandar Hla Myint.
Most of the families are Rohingyas returning from Bangladesh, having fled their homes several months ago during an intense military crackdown in and around Maungdaw.
One Kaman man said that more than 1,000 men holding swords surrounded his village in 2012. But he escaped the mob, hiding in a pigsty owned by Arakanese Buddhist friends.
