Taunggyi family murder: suspect arrested, confesses

Police have arrested a suspect over the killing of a mother and her two children in Taunggyi last week, Burmese state media has reported.

According to the police, a 56-year-old suspect named Yo Sein confessed yesterday that he has been in a relationship with Ma Shwe Yi Cho, 38, for the past seven years, and stabbed her to death when she refused to marry him.

Yo Sein admitted to the killing of her 12-year old daughter and 10-year-old nephew during the dispute, police said, adding that he had slashed 10-year-old Ar Kyu with a knife while he was sleeping in bed.

Police have revised their original statement from the weekend, when the boy was named as her son, but was in fact her nephew.
