A bomb exploded under the driver’s seat of a taxi in Rangoon earlier this week, killing the driver and seriously injuring a passenger.
Local media said the incident occurred around 7pm on Tuesday outside of the Road Transport Administration Department in the former capital’s Thingangyun township. The victim was 25 years old.
The Voice journal quoted an eye-witness as saying that following the blast, the vehicle carrying three passengers continued to roll for 200 metres. The man in the passenger seat was unconscious and his face covered in blood. Subsequent reports said the wounded passenger died from his injuries, but this has not been confirmed.
It added that the gas tank in the back of the car remained intact, refuting rumours that that was the source of the explosion.
State media in Burma has so far not reported on the incident, nor has any speculation emerged on the possible protagonists.
