Illegal substances valued at 300 million Thai Baht ($8.15 million USD) were seized by Thai authorities following a raid on a residence in Nakhon Pathom, 60 kms west of the capital Bangkok, on Sept 28, Reuters reported. The drug bust led to the arrest of four individuals.
Thai authorities did not disclose the origin of the seized drugs, but it has been asserted by the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) that neighboring Burma is believed to be the main source of methamphetamine and heroin in the region.
Since the 2021 military coup, there has been an increase in illicit drug use. The UNODC documented a surge in the trafficking of synthetic drugs in Southeast Asia. A significant amount of methamphetamine originates in the Golden Triangle, where Burma, Thailand, and Laos intersect.
