Three face jail after Buddha Bar post causes religious outcry

Three men, including one from New Zealand, are being held by police after posting an image of Buddha wearing headphones on Facebook to promote a nightclub.

Philip Blackwood, 32, from Wellington, Tun Thurein, 40, and Htut Ko Ko Lwin, 26, work at the V Gastro bar and nightclub in Rangoon. They have been charged under the Religion Act, which carries a two-year jail term for insulting or damaging any religious symbolism, plus an additional two-year penalty for those who insult a religion in writing.

The nightclub has apologised for the picture, and insist they did not mean to cause offence.

The three men are currently being held in Insein prison, and are due to return to court on 18 December.
