Two killed by speeding army truck

Sep 15, 2008 (DVB), Two Kachin women were killed after they were hit by a speeding army truck near Myitkyina university in Kachin State, northern Burma, witnesses said.

The incident occurred on 13 September at around 4pm when the truck's driver lost control of the vehicle and hit the two women who were on their way home from the market.

One of the pair, a 50-year-old woman from Sitapu ward, died on the spot while the other died half an hour later while she was waiting to be taken to hospital.

Eyewitnesses claimed traffic police had been taking photographs of the scene instead of getting the woman to hospital immediately.

It was not clear whether the vehicle belonged to Northern Command or another battalion under its control, Myikyina residents said.

The victims' relatives have not yet been informed.
