Two killed in resistance ambush on prison convoy

FROM THE DVB NEWSROOM

A political prisoner and a driver were killed, and another was injured, in an attack on a military convoy transporting prisoners Aug. 15. The convoy was transporting political prisoners from Monywa to Mandalay when it struck a landmine. Kachin doctor Zaw Htoi Aung was killed. Akar Nyain Chan, who was shackled alongside Zaw Htoi Aung, remains in critical condition. No group has claimed responsibility for the landmine attack.

Resistance forces told DVB that it had prior knowledge of the planned prisoner transfer from Monywa to Obo and Myingyan prisons in Mandalay. “We were aware beforehand of the political prisoners’ transfer and shared this information with other active groups,” said an unnamed member of the Monywa Strike Committee.

Zaw Htoi Aung was a member of the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) and the Chindwin Medical Network. Prior to his arrest in September 2021, he provided medical aid to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) forced from their homes due to violence perpetrated by the military in the Sagaing Region. Regime media has not reported on this attack.
