UN Special Envoy on Myanmar at General Assembly

The U.N. Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar, Julie Bishop, addressed the General Assembly on June 19. The speech coincided with the 81st birthday of jailed State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, who’s been held in detention since the military coup on Feb. 1, 2021.

Bishop raised Aung San Suu Kyi’s isolation with regime leader Min Aung Hlaing during her last visit to Myanmar in May. The ousted leader has been held in the capital Naypyidaw by the regime. A global movement demanding Myanmar provide “Proof of Life” for Aung San Suu Kyi culminated on June 19. Read more.
