USDP takes swipe at Suu Kyi-Obama kiss

Htay Oo, joint chairman of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), on Tuesday launched his election campaign in Hinthada (Henzada) Township in Irrawaddy Division, with a swipe at opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

“In the past, powerful countries that assumed Myanmar will never change its political system started recognising the political changes in Myanmar and associated them with us [USDP]. Previously, the United Nations and other countries blamed us. Now, the big nations which have taken action against us visit Myanmar,” he began.

“Mr Barack Obama came here two times. What happened when he came here? Someone was kissed two times!”

Rising USDP star Htay Oo was speaking during a rally in Ye Kwin village. It is assumed his “kissed two times” jibe was aimed at Suu Kyi, who met separately with the US President during his two visits, when the pair kissed and embraced upon meeting on both occasions.

Thein Aung, the chief minister of Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) Division, also adopted this campaign line, printing vinyl posters portraying the NLD leader’s greeting with Obama.

On his Facebook page, Thein Aung is shown holding a photo of Suu Kyi and Obama.
