Speaking this morning at NLD headquarters in Rangoon’s Bahan Township, party leader Aung San Suu Kyi addressed supporters in the wake of yesterday’s general election, which the NLD is widely perceived to have won.
“We must tread carefully on the path ahead,” she warned. “We would like to continue our path with goodwill for the country and loving kindness [metta] for the people with no discrimination.
“As the election results at the moment are yet to become official, it would be inappropriate for me to say any more; however I believe that our people are capable of understanding, without being told.”
Early indications are of a 70 to 80 percent voter turnout at polls on Sunday.
Exit polls in both Rangoon and Mandalay have suggested that the NLD has won a landslide victory, however exit polls from rural areas – where the ruling USDP and ethnic parties may perform stronger – are yet to be released.
