TRANSCRIPT—What’s happening in Myanmar’s Mandalay Region and northern Shan State is worth your attention.
The Brotherhood Alliance is back on the offensive after the military allegedly broke its truce and attacked areas under its control.
A peace agreement was brokered by China on January 11th to end Operation 1027 launched by the Brotherhood Alliance on October 27.
The National Unity Government (NUG) calls the latest offensive Operation Shan-Man, which refers to the twin frontlines in northern Shan and Mandalay.
The NUG announced that its Mandalay People’s Defense Force (MPDF) is fighting alongside the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA).
The Brotherhood consists of the MNDAA, the TNLA, and the Arakan Army (AA).
The AA is continuing its offensive it launched against the military in Arakan State on Nov. 13.
Eleven towns are now under AA control with fighting continuing over Thandwe, in southern Arakan, and Maungdaw, in northern Arakan.
The TNLA seized control of Nawnghkio Township, in northern Shan, after it captured the remaining military outpost there on Wednesday.
A Nawnghkio resident told DVB that some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have started to return to their homes. But many still fear retaliatory airstrikes and artillery attacks.
The Mandalay People’s Defense Force (MPDF) claimed that it has seized control of at least 36 military outposts in Madaya and Singu townships of Mandalay.
Operation Shan-Man continues in Mogok Township in northern Mandalay, as well as Lashio and Kyaukme townships in northern Shan.
