Aug 4, 2009 (DVB), The US citizen facing charges related to his intrusion into Aung San Suu Kyi's compound has been taken to hospital after suffering seizures, a Rangoon hospital said today.

John Yettaw, who is currently on trial after he swam to Suu Kyi's compound in May, was hospitalised yesterday.

A staff member at Rangoon general hospital said that information on his condition was limited because no one is being allowed into his hospital room.

"He was having a seizure and was able to drink water after he arrived [at the hospital]," he said.

Yettaw's lawyer, Khin Maung Oo, said that he has a history of epilepsy and irregular heartbeats. He is also known to be diabetic.

"Apparently he had a proper medical care in the prison and we have no idea how this happened to him," said Khin Maung Oo.

Yettaw has been held at Rangoon's Insein prison, where Suu Kyi is also being held, since the trial began in May.

A date for his and Suu Kyi's verdict has been set for 11 August, following a series of delays by the courtroom.

Richard Mei, public affairs spokesperson at the US embassy in Rangoon, said that a request had been put in for an embassy official to visit Yettaw, and were waiting for a reply.

"Our consul did go to the hospital earlier today to confirm the information," he added.
