DVB data collected on Saturday documents that at least 1,076 bodies have been recovered from the areas of Myanmar hit by the 7.7 magnitude earthquake on March 28. It further indicates that at least 2,102 people have been injured with 68 people still missing in one of the most powerful earthquakes to hit Myanmar since 1912.
Nine bodies were recovered and 43 people were rescued alive from the collapsed Sky Villa condominium in Aungmyaythazan Township of Mandalay Region, according to the Myanmar Fire Services Department.
The condo building is located on Mandalay’s 60th Street, between 22nd and 23rd streets. Some units in the 11-story condo sank due to the earthquake, leaving only seven floors above ground, according to Mandalay residents. The rescue operation is underway.
The regime in Naypyidaw declared a state of emergency in six regions and states, including Sagaing, the epicenter of the earthquake, as well neighbouring Mandalay, Magway and Bago regions.
Naypyidaw, where videos circulated on social media showing roads and highways destroyed, and Shan State, where a hotel in Aungban Township collapsed killing at least four, were some of the hardest hit areas of the country.
The National Unity Government (NUG) Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management stated that at least 469 people have been killed with 1,822 injured. Another 223 were still missing as of its initial report on March 29.
It added that around 3,000 residential buildings, 95 Buddhist temples, and 50 mosques were destroyed by the earthquake on March 28.
