At least two civilians were killed and three others were injured in airstrikes and gyrocopter attacks carried out by regime forces in Magway Region’s Myaing Township, located 130 miles (209 km) north of the region’s capital Magway, over the weekend.
Myaing residents told DVB that three Myanmar Air Force jets dropped 56 bombs around Yargyipyin and Manyin villages targeting civilians on Sunday. No casualties were reported. Myaing is contested by the People’s Defence Force (PDF).
Two displaced residents were killed and three others injured when three gyrocopters carried out an unknown number of attacks near Suwon village in Myaing on Saturday.
A gyrocopter is a miniature helicopter used for short-range, low-level attacks typically on defenceless targets, according to Bangkok-based security analyst Anthony Davis.
At least 800 regime troops have been deployed in Yargyipyin village, according to the PDF. Yargyipyin is located 10 miles (16 km) east of Kyaukkwet village, where oil fields were seized by the PDF in 2024.
Over 200 homes have been burned down in Myaing during a regime counteroffensive, which has caused thousands of residents to flee their homes in seven villages, to regain control of the Kyaukkwet oilfields since Aug. 1.
Regime forces reached eight miles (13 km) east of Kyaukkwet on July 26, according to Myaing residents. At least 30 civilians have been killed and over 30 villages have been evacuated since the counteroffensive in Myaing began in May.
At least four civilians were killed and 50 homes were destroyed across six villages in Magway’s Pauk and Myaing townships July 13-15. The PDF also seized control of an oilfield in Pauk’s Letpanto village, 17 miles (27 km) southwest of Kyaukkwet, in 2024. Pauk is located 136 miles (218 km) north of Magway.
Military operations against civilian areas intensified starting in April after Ye Win Oo replaced Min Aung Hlaing as Myanmar’s new commander-in-chief on March 30, according to a conflict monitoring report from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED) Project.
