Pro-democracy activists, diaspora groups, and human rights advocates gathered across Asia, Europe, Australia, and North America on Saturday, to mark the 38th anniversary of Myanmar’s historic ‘8888 Uprising,’ which is marked every year by pro-democracy activists to commemorate the historic date since Aug. 8, 1988.
Demonstrators in major global cities staged coordinated rallies outside Myanmar embassies and public landmarks, demanding an end to military rule and the immediate, unconditional release of all political prisoners, including jailed State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.
A global ‘Umbrella Strike’
In New York City, the New York City Burmese Community (NYCBC) organized a solidarity demonstration in Times Square, where participants executed a symbolic “Umbrella Strike.” Demonstrators held red umbrellas emblazoned with the Burmese numeral “8,” referencing a protest tactic popularized in Yangon during the 35th anniversary in 2023.
“We are united with the people in Myanmar,” Nay Tin Myint, the NYCBC spokesperson, told DVB.
Protesters urged international governments to increase pressure on the regime in Naypyidaw, emphasizing the continuity between the 1988 movement against General Ne Win’s dictatorship and the current Spring Revolution against the regime led by Min Aung Hlaing.
Kim Aris: ‘One Visit Is Not Freedom’
In an online video message released on Aug. 8, Kim Aris, the son of Aung San Suu Kyi, commemorated the historical date while reflecting on his mother’s decision to join the pro-democracy movement in 1988 following her return to Myanmar.
“Thirty-eight years ago, the people of Burma rose together to demand freedom, democracy and dignity. My mother answered that call and chose to stand together with the people of Burma… The recent ICRC visit offers hope but one visit is not freedom,” Kim Aris shared in a video on social media.
Aris reiterated calls for the immediate release of his 81-year-old mother, who has been held in isolation since the February 1, 2021 military coup, addressing her recent Aug. 3 meeting in Naypyidaw with International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) representative Arnaud de Baecque.
Bangkok demonstrations target Min Aung Hlaing’s visit
In Bangkok, Thailand, members of the activist group Yangon People’s Strike placed four red umbrellas marked with the Burmese numeral ‘8’ outside the Myanmar Embassy on Aug. 8.
The action followed the previous day’s demonstration where activists unfurled a protest banner on a BTS pedestrian overpass near the embassy to oppose Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s official two-day state reception for regime leader Min Aung Hlaing on Aug. 6–7.
