Protesters gathered for a second day over the weekend in front of The White House in Washington D.C. on Saturday.
They’re calling for the immediate release of jailed State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, who is reportedly suffering from heart complications in prison, where she’s been held by the military since it ousted her National League for Democracy (NLD) government and seized power on Feb. 1, 2021.
“We made a request to President [Trump] as we heard [Aung San Suu Kyi]’s health condition is worsening and she’s not receiving proper medical treatment,” Yin Aye, the Save Myanmar USA spokesperson, told DVB outside of The White House on Sept. 27.
“We request the [U.S.] President to use his power to pressure the Myanmar military so that all political prisoners, including [Aung San Suu Kyi] and President Win Myint [are released],” he added.
Protestors held signs demanding the U.S. oppose the regime scheduled elections, which will begin on Dec. 28 and to stop “violence acts” against civilians in Myanmar. At least 5,350 civilians have been killed since the 2021 coup, according to the U.N.
Prayers were offered for Aung San Suu Kyi. The 80-year-old Nobel laureate is facing a worsening heart condition over four years after being placed in prison, where she’s been held incommunicado.
Regime spokesperson Zaw Min Tun told pro-military media earlier this month that Aung San Suu Kyi’s health is fine without providing any evidence or proof of life, according to Aris.
