May 27, 2008 (DVB), Burmese nationals currently living in the United States have shown their support for French endeavours in the UN Security Council to try and find a solution to Burma’s current cyclone crisis.
Some 70 Burmese nationals gathered in front of the French Embassy in Washington DC on Sunday evening to express their support for the recent initiatives taken by France in the UN Security Council to bolster effective aid distribution to people in cyclone-devastated areas of Burma.
Dr Sein Win, prime minister of the National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma, the government-in-exile, was one of those who joined the crowd.
Sein Win said the military regime in Burma had failed to provide services to protect and sustain the lives of its own citizens, and so the UN Security Council and world governments should have the responsibility to save the lives of the survivors.
He also criticised the regime for its obstruction of international aid provided for cyclone victims.
"We should protect the lives of those who are in danger," Sein Win said.
"We now have millions of people who have been affected by the cyclone; we have people to help the victims but we still cannot help them effectively," he said.
"We must put a stop to this situation in which people are unable to receive aid from the international community simply because of the military regime’s obstruction."
