Burmese migrants suspected of murdering Thai family

Five Burmese migrant workers are suspected of killing four members of a Thai family, including a 5-year-old child, over an unpaid debt.

All were working on a rubber plantation in the central Thai province of Prachuap Khiri Khan when the incident happened on Tuesday, according to Channel 7 TV in Thailand.

One migrant worker, named as Nai Dahn, was apprehended in the nearby village of Bang Sapang the following day. District police chief Chalokalit said that the arrested man confessed, saying that four other Burmese rubber workers were involved and that they intended fleeing across the border to Burma.

Nai Dahn reportedly said that they killed the family after quarreling over an unsettled debt a few days earlier.

The victims were identified as Namphon, aged 30, his 27-year-old wife, 50-year-old father, and 5-year-old daughter. All died from knife wounds.

“This was a very gruesome murder,” said district police chief Chalokalit. “We are actively pursuing the suspects. Even if they have crossed the border, we have ways of tracking them down.”

Some two to three million Burmese live or work in neighbouring Thailand where wages for agricultural jobs is much higher than at home. Tens of thousands work in central and southern Thailand as manual labourers on rubber plantations.
