Burmese monks renew protests

Nov 5, 2007 (DVB), Around 100 monks staged a peaceful protest on Saturday in Mogok, Mandalay division, supported by large numbers of bystanders, according to town residents.

The monks began their protest at around 1pm and chanted prayers as they marched.

Mogok residents showed their support for the monks by applauding from the sides of the road, while others followed the monks on motorcycles.

Local police and armed units arrived at around 3pm and blocked the road at Peikswe ward, asking the protestors and supporters to disperse.

This demonstration follows a peaceful march by monks in Pakokku last week. A monk involved in the Pakokku march told DVB at the time that the protests would continue.

One local resident was pleased to see the monks out protesting again.

"The march by the monks has made us very happy," said the resident.
