Camp committee investigates refugee's death

Dec 20, 2007 (DVB), Following the death of a young refugee from Karenni refugee camp 1 in Mae Hong Son district in Thailand, the camp committee is preparing a case against Thai security forces.

Ike Oo died after being shot in the neck by camp security forces following a fight which broke out at a sports contest when guards beat up one of the students at the event.

Around 30 shots were fired by security forces, killing Ike Oo and injuring one other refugee in the leg.

There have been protests in the camp since Ike Oo's death, and now a spokesperson for the camp committee has said they are preparing to bring the case to court.

"We are now collecting evidence and information about the case in order to bring it before a Thai court," he said.

He said that they planned to seek assistance from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Legal Assistance Centres run by the International Rescue Committee to help them find interpreters and legal representation and to arrange permission to leave the camp.

Since the incident, the Thai militias who were responsible for camp security have now been removed from the camp and replaced with Thai army troops.

The administration officer of the camp, a Thai national, has also submitted his resignation.
