Family concerned about detained blogger

Feb 4, 2008 (DVB), Detained blogger Nay Phone Latt's family still do not know where he is being held, and are worried after overhearing threats against him during a raid on his grandparents' house.

On 29 January, the day of Nay Phone Latt's arrest, his grandparents' house in Thingangyun township was raided by military security affairs officials led by major Hein Htet, Nay Phone Latt's mother said.

Major Hein Htet did not tell the family that Nay Phone Latt had already been detained, but he was speaking on the telephone as a search was made of the house and appeared to making threats against the blogger.

Daw Aye Aye Than, Nay Phone Latt's mother, said that she heard Hein Htet shouting at her son over the telephone during the search.

"Hein Htet yelled into the phone, 'You lied to me, you didn't tell me the right place, I'll slap your face for that when I get back there'," Daw Aye Aye Than said.

"These are really inappropriate things for a parent to hear, and it made us really sad and worried," she said.

"It is very inappropriate to talk to him like that in front of his grandparents, who are over 80 years old."

Daw Aye Aye Than said that Nay Phone Latt had a car and a mobile telephone with him when he was last seen, but since then the family has heard no news about Nay Phone Latt, or about the car and telephone.

"We have made enquiries at Thuwanna police station, Thingangyun police station and the Ministry of Home Affairs, but they all said they didn't know anything and that he was not at any of those places," Daw Aye Aye Than said.

"I'm really worried that my son has disappeared and I don't know where he is; as time goes on, I'm getting more worried about his health and I would at least like to meet him and give him some new clothing."

Since Nay Phone Latt's arrest, Rangoon residents have said that other bloggers have gone into hiding to avoid the attention of the Burmese authorities.
