Rescue teams in Singu Township of Mandalay Region told DVB that the bodies of 30 gold miners were recovered, and five others were rescued alive on Sunday, following a gold mine collapse on March 28. Singu is located 126 miles (202 km) north of Mandalay. It is partially controlled by the National Unity Government and its People’s Defense Force (PDF).
“The five people who were rescued from the gold mining area were saved after more than 65 hours trapped [under the rubble]. As there might still be survivors inside the mine, we are continuing our search and rescue operations,” a rescue team spokesperson told DVB.
The death toll in Singu is over 50. The Myanmar Fire Service Department stated that 259 bodies have been recovered and 403 have been rescued in Mandalay Region – up to March 31 – following the earthquake. Search and rescue operations are being carried out with international rescue teams from China, Russia, and India.
