Former KNU soldier beaten and abducted

Jul 14, 2008 (DVB), A former soldier from the Karen National Union was beaten by an unidentified group of assailants in Mae Sot on Friday afternoon and taken across the border into Burma in a truck.

Saw Pu Pu was in Mae Sot near the friendship bridge that links the Thai town with Myawaddy in Burma when he was set upon by the group.

He was then dragged onto a truck which drove across the border to Myawaddy.

KNU information officer Saw Hla Nway said Saw Pu Pu had previously worked for the KNU police force on drug issues.

"He used to work for the Karen National [Union] police force two years ago, and he used to collect information on drug deals and work on controlling the flow of drugs," Saw Hla Nway said.

"After he quit the force he has had no connections with it, but we assume that his abduction now is linked to his former role."

According to a confirmed source, Saw Pu Pu was due to meet with a group of ethnic Wa people involved in drug trading on the day he was abducted.
