Fragmentation exhibit documents reality of life in Karenni State

Nyein Chan Aung is a documentary photographer from Yangon. Following the 2021 military coup, he moved to Karenni State to document the lives of people displaced from their homes, living in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, due to the conflict between resistance and regime forces.

“As I document them through my lens, I also feel traumatized as I see what they are going through,” Nyein Chan Aung told DVB. “I have a platform to show these photos of vulnerable people in a thoughtful way.”

His photo exhibition Fragmentation includes 40 photographs under two series he calls “Home” and “The lamp between bullet and smoke,” which captures the lives of civilians in resistance-controlled areas of Karenni. Fragmentation on display at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC) in Thailand’s capital from March 4-16.
