Govt must act over dam project chaos, say Pegu villagers

Villagers who say they have suffered from environmental and economic chaos as a result of a newly built hydropower dam in Pegu Division’s Taungtaunggyi held a protest on Sunday, calling on the government to act.

Construction of the Thauk Ye Khat project in Taungtoo Township ended in October. The damming of the river has swamped the area, blocking waterways which usually allow traders to transport their goods.

The 40 megawatt capacity Thauk Ye Khat dam began operations at the end of last year. According to Karen News, Karen National Union chairperson Saw Eh Wah said that 10,000 people from across 40 villages have been affected.

Villagers have protested against the Shwe Energy (Asia World) Company development since its inception in 2012. The operators claimed that only 56 acres of land would be affected.
