Political scientist, economist, and author of influential books The End of History and the Last Man and Trust: Social Virtues and Creation of Prosperity, Francis Fukuyama visited Rangoon to give his speech, “Building a democratic state”.
The noted academic and Senior Fellow at Stanford University spoke to DVB on the sidelines of the event about some of the issues facing Burma ahead of the November general elections, as the nation moves toward democracy.
Touching on the need for civil institutions, an investment in the rule of law, and the imperative role sound economic policies play in a developing democracy, Mr Fukuyama discusses just how far Burma has come, as well as how far the country has to go.
