Kachin refugees flee fighting

More than a week of intense fighting in northern Burma’s Kachin state has forced thousands of refugees from their homes. It marks the heaviest spell of conflict in Burma’s north since 2009, when 37,000 Kachin fled to China. How China will react to the current conflict remains to be seen – it called for restraint from both sides yesterday as a 17-year ceasefire between the Burmese government and Kachin Independence Army (KIA) descends into warfare.
