Liquid nitrogen tank explodes in Sagaing sugar plant

An explosion at a sugar refinery plant in Sagaing Division on Monday left one man dead and another injured.

Htet Naing Win, an employee at the Great Wall sugar refinery factory in Katha, died on the spot when a liquid nitrogen tank he was handling exploded.

“The blast shook the whole village of Maunggon. The glass ceiling shattered and a cloud of black smoke rose up,” said a local eye witness.

Another employee, named as Kyaw Htin, who was standing nearby, sustained laceration wounds across his body from the broken glass from the shattered ceiling. He also lost his hearing due to ruptured ear drums.

Local police said Kyaw Htin was rushed to hospital where he is currently receiving medical attention. Police say they have launched an investigation into the incident.
