Man stabs wife after gambling row

A woman in Rangoon has died from stab wounds after her husband allegedly attacked her with a broken bottle following a row over gambling debts.

Locals in the former capital’s North Okkalapa township told DVB that the incident took place on Saturday last week. The husband of 25-year-old tutor Htet Htet Aye Kyaw had asked his wife to pay a two million kyat ($US2,500) bet he owed on the football, which she refused.

“The girl told him she didn’t have that amount of money,” a neighbour of the couple said. “She runs a private tuition class [at her house], and the man got angry that she refused him in front of her students.

“So he told her to come inside the house and then stabbed her with a broken glass liquor bottle. After that, he also threatened her parents not to come into the house or  he would stab them too.”

Police have arrested the husband, another neighbour said. “Apparently he confessed everything. The police went to his house to look for the [murder weapon] after that – he told them he stabbed her [with the broken bottle] and dumped it in the toilet, and they found it.”

A funeral was held for Htet Htet Aye Kyaw is Rangoon yesterday.
