Maungdaw policeman commits suicide after groping accusation

A police officer in Maungdaw, Arakan State, was found dead on Sunday with a gunshot to his head – an apparent act of suicide following an incident involving a local woman.

Police constable Tun Thet Aung, 21, was on guard duty at Mawrawady police outpost when his colleagues heard a gunshot and subsequently found him dead with a bullet wound in the front of his head. His firearm lay by his side.

A local police officer who was at the scene said Tun Thet Aung left a voice recording on his mobile phone as a suicide note, explaining that he had been accused on Saturday by a local woman of grabbing her hand and saying inappropriate things to her. He said he had been very embarrassed by the incident. He reportedly said he did not see any other way to resolve the matter.

Tun Thet Aung was a native of Meikhtila Township in Mandalay. His body was sent to Alethankyaw village hospital near Maungdaw for an autopsy as police opened an investigation into his death.
