Monks return to Ngway Kyar Yan monastery

Dec 18, 2007 (DVB), Around 90 monks have been allowed to return to Ngway Kyar Yan monastery in South Okkalapa township, Rangoon, according to a source close to the monastery.

The monastery's abbot, U Yaywata, was among those released.

However, the monastery remains under close watch by government officials, and lay supporters are not allowed to pay visits.

A source close to the monastery said that the monks were released on Saturday and Sunday from detention centres where they had been held since late September in connection with the public demonstrations.

The situation of the deputy abbot of the monastery, who was reported to have been beaten up while in detention, is still unclear.

The monastery was unavailable for comment.

The Ngway Kyar Yan monastery was the target of a brutal raid by government security forces in late September.
