The Fire Services Department stated that heavy rain and strong winds knocked down trees and caused flash flooding on Monday in Yangon’s Kamayut, Yankin, Mayangon and Kyimyindaing townships. No casualties were reported. “A tree fell down onto two vehicles,” a Kamayut resident told DVB.
Firefighters and charity workers in Kamayut helped residents remove the fallen tree from vehicles on University Avenue road on Sept. 14. Heavy wind also caused trees to topple in Mayangon, Yankin and Kyimyindaing townships, according to the Fire Services Department. A taxi driver in Yangon told DVB that this caused gridlock on Pyay Road for nearly two hours.
Residents of Naypyidaw’s Ottarathiri Township told DVB that around 160 homes from Posataw village were flooded due to heavy rain and strong wind on Sept. 14. Flash flooding was reported by rescue workers in Naypyidaw’s Lewe Township, along the Yangon-Mandalay highway, on Sept. 14.
The regime’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology predicts more rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds in Naypyidaw, Yangon, Mandalay, Bago, Ayeyarwady and Tanintharyi regions as well as in Karenni, Karen, Mon, and Arakan states until Sept. 19.
This is due to strong monsoon wind formed over southern Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. Surface winds may reach 25-30 miles (40-48.3 km) per hour. It also warned residents living near creeks and rivers to remain alert for possible landslides and flash floods caused by the heavy rainfall and strong winds.
